If you want to hire a domestic helper usually the best way is to ask your friends to ask their helpers if they know someone who is available. People usually hire Philippinas since they can speak English.

 

After you find someone who wants to work for you, the following can happen:

1. The person has Macau ID (BIR) and you can hire her, no legalities involved (although it’s now very hard to find Phillipine helpers with Macau ID since the casinos hire them for a better pay because they pose no quota or worker import problem).

2. The person has a blue card, in which case working for you will not be legal, since blue card holders can only work for their sponsors (fines & sanctions apply to both parties, although many people do it because it’s not easy to trace, but in the event of a denounce, you may be in trouble)

3. The person is in Macau on a tourist visa and so it’s also not legal to work for you.

4. The person is not in Macau but is willing to come to Macau to work for you.

 

If you wish to legalize the situation and the person already has a blue card, you will have to transfer sponsorship to you. If the person is on a tourist visa or is not in Macau, you will have to ask the Government to allow you to “import” a worker. Check here what you need to do at the Labour Affairs Bureau.

 

Note that: in case the person is on a tourist visa (point 3.), both of you must agree what you will do if while waiting for approval from the Government, the visa expires. Legally you will be responsible for repatriation expenses, but you may arrange otherwise (anyway, with TigerAirways tickets to Manila are now very cheap).

 

In the event you are offering sponsorship to someone you don’t know (point 4.), think about bringing the person to Macau to interview (as we said, tickets are cheap...) and then, if the visa expires while the formalities are ongoing, you may do as for the previous case.
